About Me

Ensuring the car runs effectively

I drive my car for a ride sharing company. I need to have it be very reliable so that I can do a lot of jobs and keep my driver ratings as high as possible. Keeping my car running efficiently and effectively helps me to earn as much as possible. Getting regular car services, particularly if you do a lot of kilometres like I do, is an important part of keeping the car running well. I've even found a place that can do servicing during my lunch breaks so I get back on the road quickly. This blog is all about car servicing tips for drivers.

Extending the Life of Your Transmission: The Three Key Tips That You Might Not Know About

Whether your transmission is automatic or manual, 4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive, it's a crucial part of your vehicle. It's so crucial that your vehicle isn't safe to drive when the transmission shows signs of failure such as slipping or difficult shifting. Fortunately, you can often delay a very costly transmission repair if you practise the following transmission preservation tips. Here's what you need to know to get the very most from 2- and 4-wheel-drive transmissions

1. Switch to Synthetic

Whilst synthetic transmission fluid is more costly than non-synthetic, it's worth the extra cost to keep your transmission healthy longer. Regular transmission fluid contains a number of organic compounds, and those compounds are highly vulnerable to the heat that's generated when your vehicle is under stressful conditions like rough roads. When the compounds break down, your transmission fluid suffers. This can mean that your transmission is more likely to sustain damage. Synthetic transmission fluid isn't vulnerable to these issues because it's free of organic compounds.

2. Wait for the Warm-Up

When the weather's a bit cold, it takes you a while to feel comfortable -- and your transmission is no different. If you start your vehicle and then drive it straight away, you don't allow the cold transmission fluid to warm up and start moving. This can cause extra friction that will eventually damage your transmission. When you start your vehicle, simply let the engine idle for a few minutes before you start driving. An extra couple of minutes can really help avoid early transmission damage.

3. Decide to Drive Differently

Your driving habits affect not only you and others on the road but also your transmission. Rough driving can cause considerable strain on your transmission, and it might mean that you'll face a transmission repair or replacement very soon. Some things to avoid whilst driving include:

  • Accelerating too quickly after being at a full stop
  • Continually changing your speed whilst in motion
  • Stopping your vehicle very abruptly

Aim to keep your motions smooth and well controlled whilst you're driving. The ride will be more pleasant and your transmission will have a longer life, too.

The three tips discussed above are quite easy to implement -- and you have the extra motivation of realising a longer life span for your transmission if you try to put these things into effect today. Ask your local auto service provider for a transmission check soon to make sure that you're doing everything right for your transmission and for its longevity.
