I drive my car for a ride sharing company. I need to have it be very reliable so that I can do a lot of jobs and keep my driver ratings as high as possible. Getting regular car services, particularly if you do a lot of kilometres like I do, is an important part of keeping the car running well. I've even found a place that can do servicing during my lunch breaks so I get back on the road quickly. This blog is all about car servicing tips for drivers.

A Guide On Roadworthy Inspections

The roadworthy inspection concept can be pretty confusing for most drivers. In most cases, they flout local traffic regulations since they do not know when their cars need a certificate of roadworthiness. Below is a guide with all you need to know about roadworthy inspections

What Are Roadworthy Inspections?

A roadworthy inspection is an assessment that examines whether your vehicle is safe to drive on the Australian road network. Ideally, the examination covers vital components such as the wheels, steering, braking, lights, wipers, windscreen, chassis and safety belts. The roadworthy inspection should not be confused with conventional pre-purchase vehicle inspections since they do not cover non-safety features such as the interior panels, AC, radio and paintwork. The certificate of roadworthiness remains valid for a specified period. After this, you cannot use it to prove the vehicle is roadworthy.

When Do You Need A Roadworthy Inspection?

You will need a roadworthy inspection when selling your car or re-registering it in another territory. Other compelling reasons to acquire the certificate include:

  • When you modify the vehicle's original frame. For instance, you could have extended the chassis to increase the wheelbase or vehicle's seating capacity.
  • When you convert a left-hand drive car to a right-hand drive.
  • When you build a custom vehicle from the ground up. For instance, enthusiasts often build beach buggies, hot rods and off-road monsters from their home garages.
  • Written-off vehicles that receive a new lease of life after repairs need a certificate of roadworthiness to prove that they do not have defects that could endanger occupants and other road users.

How Do You Acquire A Certificate Of Roadworthiness?

Check your territory's website to establish accredited vehicle inspectors in your locality. Inquire about the inspector's availability and how long it takes to acquire the certificate of roadworthiness. This is especially important if you need the document within a short period.

Regardless, you should conduct minor checks and repairs to ensure your vehicle passes the roadworthiness assessment. For example, you should replace worn-out tires and suspension components, eliminate oil leaks, service the brake system and ensure all lights are functional. During the inspection, the professional conducts a thorough evaluation to determine whether the vehicle passes all tests. If it does not, you should perform the recommended repairs and go for another inspection within fourteen days.

Suppose you feel the inspector was unprofessional and your vehicle meets the prescribed requirements. In that case, you should seek a second inspection from a certified professional and use the second inspection report to invalidate the first one.
